I agree, it is a challenging book, but well worth the effort! It's so deep and meaningful on so many levels and provides insightful social commentary on the cold, dispassionate state of modern society ie capitalism/consumerism.

I'm confounded about the meaning of the wind-up bird itself. I believe it represents society's automation of the individual; capitalism winds us up like machines so we can continue producing for the system. I'd be interested to hear your take on its symbolism.

I am a huge fan of Murakami. I love his work. It is not often that an author is brave enough to write about the mundane, but Murakami doesn't shirk from this. His characters are always stopping to have a meal, or a wash, or to listen to the radio. He writes about these things beautifully. After duping you into believing you are reading some domestic novel he hits you with a talking cat or a sheep (in another of his novels).

Murakami isn't for everybody, but if you like a bit of quirkiness in your novels Murakami San is teh man for you.
